I just tried (and failed) to collect Sprog from ‘holiday club’… when I got there the school was deserted and the gates locked. I gave up and came home for a cup of tea. I’m wondering if:

they were in the pub over the road
they have been bussed out somewhere to work as cheap labour
they’ve all been doped and are sitting quietly somewhere in school
I’m not meant to come early to pick up without mentioning it
I should have been organised enough to have their number on my phone

Our family cat, Boris, who was 16 and lived with my mother died yesterday. He’d been in fine fettle the day before, his usual caterwauling, tray clanging, cupboard banging self. Being clever he’d learned to bang the cupboard for biscuits and the trays by the fridge for meat, if only someone had made him a Stephen Hawking style speech synthesiser, I think he would have had a lot to say…

I’ve not told Sprog yet, he had a busy day today at school, then seeing his good friend at soft play and then the school disco, so I didn’t want to ruin that. He seemed too tired this evening so I suppose it will have to be tomorrow. He coped with my mothers dog dying quite well but he considered Boris to be his brother and enjoyed looking after him when we visited. I got Boris when I was a teenager… so in Sprogs eyes Boris came first, then Sprog, we are all a big family. I think this is going to be a difficult conversation…

Impending Arrival

We told Sprog today that he will hopefully have a baby sister or brother sometime in early July, thankfully he was really pleased. His first thoughts:

Can he be there to see it ‘come out’
How does it get out?!
He wants to choose the name
If it’s good it can sleep in his room on the floor by his bed, if it’s naughty it will have to sleep in our room
He wants it to come out now

Thanks! I like to imagine that maybe another me travelled back from the future to make the lasagne so I’d be saved from having microwaved jacket potatoes (ugh!). Either way I end up being awesome, which is, in itself, awesome!

Survivor Guilt

We survived Sprog’s low key birthday party which was quite tiring despite not having to do that much. Luckily it was a joint party with a kid from school and was held at the local soft play place so the whole class was invited. I did party bags, the other parent did snacks, we mingled and I tried (and mostly failed) to remember who all the other children were and their parents names. Eveyone seemed to enjoy themselves and we came home with boat loads of presents, so much that Sprog hasn’t even opened most of them yet.

I feel slightly uneasy about the amount of presents he got, there are so many it’s like rampant consumerism gone mad. I would hate to have a kids party and say ‘no presents’ but sometimes I do wonder if that would be better…

Maybe it’s just because it’s so close to Christmas that it seems we’re suffering from consumerist oveload at the moment. I attempted to ration the presents to make it last a little longer but that was thwarted by Sprogs amazing ability to detect presents from a 100 ft distance.

Christmas card dilemma

Sprog has got Christmas cards from over 50% of his classmates, he’s not that bothered about getting them and there are several he’s not even opened. Do I (I know it will end up being me) write 30 small cards to give 30 small kids who more than likely don’t really care? Will we be the outcasts if I don’t bother?!
